A comprehensive Guidebook to treatment options and the latest medical advances for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is a complex, poorly understood disorder that is characterized by chronic, severe pain and progressive changes in skin, muscle, and bone. Although the precise causes of RSD are unknown, it often occurs following an injury, often minor in nature. Some experts believe that RSD represents an exaggerated response of the sympathetic nervous system to some form of injury or insult (eg. surgery) to the area resulting in chronic, severe, sometimes debilitating pain. Although the signs and symptoms of RSD vary depending upon the clinical stage of the disorder, the one common feature shared by all 3 clinical stages (early, established, or late RSD) is pain.

Because currently there is no cure for RSD, the goals of treatment include 1) controlling and minimizing pain to the greatest extent possible; 2) restoring function to the RSD-affected limb; 3) preventing progression of the disease process to the late stage; and 4) improving the patient's quality of life and psycholocial functioning.

The MediFocus Guidebook on Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy will inform you about the signs and symptoms of RSD, the treatment options including drug therapy, sympathetic nerve blocks, chemical and surgical sympathectomy, physical therapy, and other methods used for controlling pain and improving quality of life. You will also learn about new, experimental treatments that are currently under investigation that may be effective for the management of RSD.

You will also learn about the doctors, hospitals, and medical centers that are at the leading edge in conducting clinical research about RSD. A list of important questions to ask your doctor, and a valuable directory of resources, organizations, and support groups that can help patients with RSD are included in this Guidebook.

I found this book very helpful and informative after I was diagnosed with RSD almost a year and a half ago. I had never heard of it before and it answered lots of questions, although I wish it was more in layman's terms than it was. Overall I am glad I purchased it.

Ty
I want to thank the author for writing about this horrendous disease. It is a much needed book to bring awareness of it. However, I WILL NOT PURCHASE this book because anyone publishing something for public information regarding this insidious disease needs to be diligent in providing accurate information.

While reading the title alone, then looking at the published date the author is not providing accurate & up-to-date information. In the early 90's the name of this disease was changed from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy to COMPLEX REGIONAL PAIN SYNDROME [CRPS]. Because the majority of doctors are not aware of this disease & many who are have not acquired current knowledge about it. As a result they are diagnosing patients with the name of a disease that was changed decades ago. It happened to me in 2009, after a 16- year search to discover what was/is wrong.

The second misinformation I detected in the description pertained to the "stages" of the disease. CRPS/RSD does NOT HAVE stages. While in parenthesis it mentioned "early, established, & late stage", those terms seem reasonable however not in defining them as stages. Anyone's can develop a symptom at any point in when living with the disease. While some symptoms are more common when you get the disease or have had it for decades, anyone CAN GET the SYMPTOM AT ANY TIME.

I sincerely hope the author does not quit writing about this life-altering, although I hope he is more diligent in sharing the correct information next time.
As a newly diagnosed RSD patient the information was really helpful. However, I found it hard to access the articles on my .
After a broken shoulder, I kept complaining to the surgeon that my hand hurt. The physical therapist diagnosed it as a broken/sprained/fractured bone in my hand. The surgeon correctly diagnosed the ailment, sent me for injections, medications and to a hand therapist.

Too many medical professionals give me the look .... "it's all in his head".

This book gave me much information on RSD and I recommend it highly.
I found this book helpful with good suggestions for coping with RSD. My case is mild and fortunately easing away.I think this book would be very encouraging for people with severe symptoms .The cases mentioned had their RSD for Years,I personally found this very discouraging being told it could be a few 2-3 months for me. So I mentally did not want to relate to those cases. But saying that ,people who have relenting pain for years are given hope that a end can come to their pain.
Don't waste your money tells you NOTHIng
My husband has RSD for 13 years wanted to see what the world had to say this is a JOKE
Don't buy it I could write a book telling you all about it and what we have tried. Everything
veryn informative
