Having read Mr Griffith's horror novels, which I loved, I found this a really enjoyable change. The protagonist, Gavin, held the story together beautifully. The tale was poignant, sad, and thought provoking. There is a time shifting aspect to this, which I found very interesting and perfectly placed within the story. When Gavin's brother dies in a road traffic accident, he and his family fall apart. Sounds predictable but it isn't. It is a clever plot, full of dark and raw emotions.
I wish it had been longer but I think that the length was exactly what is was meant to be.
Recommended. 5 stars from me.

A great book from Colin Griffiths
The tragic death of a child.... the way it tears the family apart..... what would you be like....
what would you do ..... once you start reading this book you won't want to put it down
This was an enthralling book. Just when I had made up my mind it was definitely going to turn out one way, it turned around and went another. This book is gritty, interesting, hangs onto you from start to finish, and really gets inside the characters heads. I could relate to a lot of it and empathise with pretty much all of it. It's a book that feels like a real life story. A 5* read you won't regret.
The story of how a tragic childhood accident changed the lives of one family. It's both extremely sad and uplifting in places as one man struggles to come to terms with what his life has become. Can he reconcile his past with his future before it's too late?
Well-constructed and leaves the reader thinking "if only..." for a long time afterwards. Well done to author Colin Griffiths.
I was completely moved by this story! Very different from the other stories I've read by this author but its a side of the author's writing I really connected to.
The story goes through the lead character's emotions, reactions and life choices as he faces the death of his brother. As a reader you are pulled into the story, living and breathing every part of the story, the mistakes and the triumphs.
A highly recommended read!
First let me say this book is not an action packed thriller, but it is an amazing story. The author tells the story of a young man named Gavin whose whole life changed the day his brother Damien was killed. Readers get to follow through with Gavin as he recalls his life and what hatred and sorrow can do to someone. I found the writing amazing and love the paranormal twist in this story. IT is a pleasure to read a story that doesn't rely on every page filled with action to tell a compelling story. This is a wonderful story that readers will want to sit back, relax and enjoy. I like the way the story was told and the ending was astounding, great job on an intriguing read.
A very thought-provoking and emotional account of how the death of the youngest son affects a family for decades afterwards. He is killed when he runs out into the road and is hit by a vehicle. This leads to reactions of blame, denial, withdrawal, which tear the family to pieces.
The story is told in the first person, through the eyes of the older brother, who is perhaps the one most affected by the sad event. It completely derails him, and the story recounts his struggles with alcohol and drugs, and with his own pent-up aggression. His relationships all end up sabotaged by the effects this single event has had on his life, yet he has a heart of gold and genuinely means well. He is often visited by the ghost (or is it his own mental projection?) of his little brother, as he cannot let the past go. We see the effects on the rest of his family through his eyes as the story progresses.
The book is structured as he tells his story to an unknown listener, whose identity becomes known towards the end. As he unburdens himself, we realise we are heading towards some sort of resolution. To say more would be to spoil it, but it's well worth your time.
As always with a Colin Griffiths book, the characters are all very real and brilliantly drawn.
This was an excellent novella by Griffiths. I found his style of storytelling very engaging and intimate.
The story centers on a young man Gavin, whose life, emotions and actions have been defined by the tragic death of his younger brother, when Gavin was eleven. We follow Gavin's progression through drink, drugs and violence, to its inevitable conclusion.
I like this author's style and would be prepared to read more of his work.
